May 2003: Quarter Shrinker and more

Page 2

This month we had a number of things going on, including a paintball party for Thomas' and Peter's birthday, as well as the construction of a Quarter Shrinker for Peter's science class.

The start of the closing contact. We are trying to switch about 30,000 volts from the capacitor to across the work coil is as short of time as possible.

The white standoffs are holding portions of the closing switch. The saftey relay to the left is to discharge the capacitor (and keep it discharged) when the system is not is use.

The closing contacts are two brass spheres. The bottom sphere is held in place. The upper one is attached to copper pipe that slides through the Delron block to make contact with the lower block.

A simple (but high voltage) rectifier is used in the charging circuit. The meters and control knob. In the back you can see the contact balls.
